Development of a Rover for Soil Sampling & Fertility Testing
Development of a Rover for Soil Sampling & Fertility Testing

Having good quality food is essential to a country. If its citizens have access to good quality food, then a country can easily beat diseases, and have a healthy population. This project addresses the critical need for efficient soil fertility testing in agriculture. By automating the process using a rover equipped with soil sensors, the project aims to improve crop yields and ensure food quality.

In India, as around 70% of the population works in the agriculture industry, it is very important to have the crops which the industry produces of good quality, so that the seller, i.e., the farmer can make profit and can sell consistently, as well as the consumer can get the nutrition for which he/she is consuming the grain/vegetable/fruit.

For a good quality produce, the soil in which the crops are cultivated needs to be fertile. It needs to match the environment in which a particular crop can grow properly. It is not practically possible to check the fertility of every part of a huge farmland. The conventional methods involve collecting a soil sample from a location in the farm and then bringing them back to the lab for testing. But as it is an era of automation, this process can be automated.

Previous implementations by others do include robots for soil testing, but they need to collect the soil samples and then bring them back to the lab for testing. This process could be optimized further to save time and effort. Thus, research was carried out on whether it was possible to conduct these soil tests on-field. This project depicts the design and development of a rover which can be used to solve this problem.

Sensors can be used for various soil tests. The main parameters to determine soil health are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) contents in the soil and its pH level. These measures can help us assess the quality of soil and then take necessary measures for fertilization, amount of insecticides and pesticides to be used, etc. A working prototype of a rover for on-field soil testing was designed, developed, programmed, and tested successfully.
