Dr. Shalaka Patil is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biosciences and Technology, MIT-WPU, Pune. She is a dedicated and passionate researcher with a PhD in Biology from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, under the supervision of Prof. Kundan Sengupta. She holds university rank 1 for her M.Sc. in microbiology from SPPU. She has qualified CSIR-UGC NET-JRF with AIR 22. Her research area is genome biology and chromosomal instability. Her doctoral work focused on understanding the role of the nuclear envelope in maintaining the genomic stability of cancer cells. After her PhD, she worked as a Senior Project Associate at IISER Pune on a project to develop a cost-effective FISH kit for detecting HER2 amplification in breast cancer patient samples. Later, she joined the CNRS Institute of Human Genetics, Montpellier, France, for her postdoctoral research with Dr. Marcel Mechali. Her post-doctoral work was focused on developing an in vivo system to examine the phase separation of the initiation of DNA replication. Through her work, she aims to contribute to advancements in medical research, particularly developing strategies for the early diagnosis of cancers. Her research work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, highlighting significant findings in genome stability and the impact of chromosomal aberrations on cancer progression.
