Dr. Sandeep Chandrakant Potnis

Bio

Prof. Sandeep Potnis has more than 35 years of teaching and industrial experience. He is Head of Tunnel Engineering program at MIT WPU. Seven research scholars are pursuing Ph.D. in Tunnel Engineering under his guidance. Three scholars have completed their Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. Potnis. More than 50 Research papers are published in reputed journals.

Dr. Potnis conducted six months ‘Certificate Programs in Tunnel Engineering’ in collaboration with Montan University, Leoben, Austria. (First of its kind in India) since 2017. He was instrumental in developing the unique M.Tech.(Tunnel Engineering) program at MITWPU, Pune. This program is endorsed by International Tunnelling Association (ITA). Dr. Potnis has been providing consultancy services to various Tunnel Projects such as Pune Metro TBM and NATM Tunnel, NATM Tunnel and Road Projectat Package XVII, Vadodara Mumbai Express Way, Bhoj and Morbe. He has provided satisfactory solutions to control the overcut and also for improving the shotcrete quality.

Dr. Potnis is Member of Governing Council of Tunnelling Association of India (TAI), New Delhi. Dr. Potnis is Member of Executive Council of Indian Society for Rock Mechanics and Tunnelling Technology (ISRMTT), New Delhi. Dr Potnis is member of Committee of Underground Space of International Tunnelling Association (ITACUS). He is also Member of Steering Board of ITA Committee for Education and Training (ITACET). Dr. Potnis is renowned Tunnel Expert and is associated with various tunnel projects in India. Dr. Potnis has been conducting Training Programs on ‘Planning, Design, Construction and Equipment Management for Tunnel Construction works’ for the Officers of Border Road Organisation (BRO) at MIT World Peace University, Pune. Professor Potnis is Member of Scientific Committee of World Tunnel Congress – 2024, Shenzhen, China and World Tunnel Congress – 2025, Stockholm, Sweden. Prof. Potnis is Member of Editorial Board of Journal of Rock Mechanics and Tunnelling Technology (JRMTT). (www.isrmtt.com) He is recipient of 'Best Innovative teacher Award' of Pune University, Pune. He has presented papers in various conferences in India and abroad including Montan University, Leoben, Austria and Stanford University, USA. He is recipient of 'IUCEE Faculty Fellow Award' by Indo-Universal Collaboration for Engineering Education (IUCEE), 2018. He has been awarded Fellowship by Institute of Engineers, India. He has presented more than 15 Research papers in number of World Tunnel Congress (WTC) and other International Tunnel Conferences across the globe. I was instrumental in having Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Indian Army and MIT World Peace University, Pune.

Three research papers of his three M.Tech. (Tunnel Engg.) students were selected for oral presentation at ITA–AITES WORLD TUNNEL CONGRESS (WTC 2020) that took place at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in May 2020.
