Dr. Nilesh Bajad - faculty At MIT-WPU, Pune

Bio

Dr. Nilesh Bajad completed his Doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, under the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF), India’s most prestigious doctoral fellowship awarded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. He earned his Master’s degree from IIT (BHU), where he developed a strong foundation in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and completed his B Pharm from the Government College of Pharmacy, Amravati. He is an active Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) (2025–Present). He has qualified several national-level competitive examinations, including GPAT (AIR 260), GATE (Life Sciences), GAT-B/JNU-CEEB (AIR 29), and NIPER-JEE in 2019.

His Ph.D. research, titled “Exploring the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of rationally designed and synthesized novel multifunctional ligands for Alzheimer’s disease,” focused on the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of multifunctional small molecules integrating therapeutic and diagnostic (theranostic) functionalities. The work aimed to develop novel agents capable of crossing the blood–brain barrier, detecting amyloid aggregates, and modulating key enzymatic and oxidative pathways implicated in Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis.

Dr. Bajad possesses extensive experience in organic synthesis, biophysical and biochemical assays, cell-based evaluations, assay development, and animal model studies. His research lies at the interface of medicinal chemistry, drug discovery, and neuroscience, with a strong translational focus. He has presented his work at major international conferences including AD/PD 2024 (Lisbon, Portugal), SNAIA 2024 (Paris, France), and AICBBM-1 2024 (Perugia, Italy), and received SERB–International Travel Support for AD/PD 2024. He was awarded with the Best Presentation Award by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) at SNAIA 2024, National School of Chemistry of Paris, PSL University, France. His long-term vision is to advance neuroscience-driven drug discovery by integrating chemistry and biology to develop innovative theranostic and therapeutic agents for neurodegenerative diseases.

Educational Qualifications
M. Pharm, PhD

Area of Expertise

Dr. Bajad’s research focuses on synthetic and medicinal chemistry–driven drug discovery for neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Alzheimer’s disease. His work emphasizes the rational design and synthesis of multifunctional and multi-target directed ligands (MTDLs) that integrate therapeutic and diagnostic (theranostic) capabilities. The research involves rational drug design, and biological evaluation across enzymatic, cellular, and in vivo models, with the overarching goal of developing brain-penetrant small molecules capable of modulating complex pathological processes in neurodegeneration.
