Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad : Empowering Future Leaders at MIT-WPU

The 14 th Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad (BCS) wrapped up its impactful three-day run at MIT World Peace University, Pune on 8, 9, and 10 February 2025. As a premier leadership development forum, the event brought together India's promising young minds to engage with seasoned political leaders and visionaries. The gathering created a dynamic environment where academic theory met real-world governance challenges, empowering students to develop practical leadership skills. Through meaningful dialogue and mentorship opportunities, the BCS continued its mission of nurturing the next wave of democratic leaders who will help shape India's future.
Inaugural Ceremony
The opening ceremony of the Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad set a powerful tone with rich symbolism and distinguished guests. The ringing of the Democracy Bell marked the start of this transformative gathering, followed by the traditional lighting of the lamp and a World Peace Prayer that embodied the event's values of enlightenment and harmony. The release of balloons into the sky captured the spirit of boundless possibility that defines this youth leadership forum.
Under the skilled guidance of Dr. Gautam S. Bapat as master of ceremonies, the attendees were welcomed by Vice Chancellor Dr. R. M. Chitnis reinforcing the institution's dedication toward developing tomorrow's leaders. The event was graced by luminaries including Former Lok Sabha Speaker, Smt. Sumitra Mahajan, Former Speaker, Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, Dr. C. P. Joshi, and Co-Founder and CMO at boAt Lifestyle Shri. Aman Gupta, whose participation highlighted the BCS's significance in bridging generations of leadership.
Deep Dives into Critical Issues: Engaging Sessions and Robust Discussions
The heart of the Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad lay in its series of engaging sessions, each meticulously crafted to address critical issues faced by Indian youth and the nation as a whole.
Session 1: Left, Right, or Out of Sight? Ideologies in Indian Politics
The opening session began with an illuminating film about the National Legislators' Conference Bharat, setting the stage for deeper discussions on governance and leadership. Dr. Rahul V. Karad, MIT World Peace University's Executive President, outlined the vision and mission of the Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad, highlighting its vital role in cultivating democratic awareness among students.
A central moment was the presentation of the Ideal Legislative Assembly Speaker Award to Shri. Satish Mahana, Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. The ceremony celebrated his outstanding contributions to democratic governance and youth engagement, featuring a documentary of his achievements and the bestowal of traditional honours including a Citation, Shawl, and Puneri Pagadi. In his acceptance speech, Shri. Satish Mahana, Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly reinforced his dedication to democratic values. The event was enriched by Smt. Sumitra Mahajan's, Former Lok Sabha Speaker blessings and a presentation about the World Peace Dome and its associated institutions. UNESCO Chair Holder Prof. Dr. Vishwanath D. Karad, the visionary behind MIT's establishments in Pune, shared his insights, while Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, conveyed the government's support via video message. The session concluded with an engaging panel discussion exploring contemporary political ideologies in India.
Session 2 : Revadi Culture: A Fiscal Burden or Necessary Support?
The session revolved around the welfare policies and their economic impact in a compelling session led by Jharkhand Legislative Assembly Speaker Shri. Rabindra Nath Mahato. At the heart of the discussion was the "Revadi Culture" discourse – examining whether welfare initiatives strengthen the social fabric or strain state resources. Student delegates presented diverse viewpoints, enriching the dialogue with fresh perspectives. Shri. Pawan Khera, who serves as Chairman of Media & Publicity for the All India Congress Committee and holds membership in the Congress Working Committee, shared his insights on the matter. The session culminated in a resolution vote, enabling participants to take a stand on this critical issue while deepening their understanding of welfare policy complexities.
Session 3: Indian Culture or Western Glamour: The Dilemma of Indian Youth
The exploration of cultural identity in modern India took centre stage during a thought-provoking session chaired by Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Shri. Kuldeep Singh Pathania. The discussion examined how young Indians balance traditional values with global influences in an increasingly interconnected world. Distinguished speakers Smt. Khushbu Sundar, Noted Actress & Film Producer, Shri. Arun Govil, Hon'ble member of Parliament Lok Sabha & Noted Actor and Acharya Sri Shivam, Dean VVSS Vishwashanti Foundation, World Peace Dome, shared perspectives on integrating spirituality into governance while preserving India's rich cultural heritage.
A highlight of the day was the Bharat Asmita Jana Pratinidhi Shreshtha award ceremony, celebrating excellence in parliamentary practice among young leaders. Civil Aviation Minister Shri. Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu received this prestigious recognition, while emerging leaders contributed their insights on effective parliamentary engagement.
Session 4: AI and Social Media: Power or Pitfall?
The pivotal role of emerging technologies in shaping society and governance centred during an engaging session chaired by Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Shri. Thomas A. Sangma. The discussion examined the dual nature of AI and social media as tools that both empower and challenge modern society. Former Rajya Sabha Television Executive Director Shri. Rajesh Badal offered valuable insights into these technological developments. The session concluded with participants voting on a resolution addressing the ethical dimensions and societal impact of these transformative technologies.
Valedictory Ceremony
The 14 th Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad concluded on a high note with Maharashtra's Minister of Sports, Youth Welfare and Minority Development and Aukaf, Shri. Dattatray Bharne, presiding as Chief Guest. Dr. Rahul V. Karad outlined the future direction of this youth parliament initiative, encouraging delegates to carry forward their leadership journey. The symbolic Ekta Sutra ceremony, where participants tied threads representing solidarity, reinforced their shared commitment toward India's political future.
This landmark gathering at MIT-WPU exceeded its goals of cultivating democratic values and leadership capabilities among India's youth. Through meaningful debates, expert interactions, and collaborative exercises, the BCS equipped participants with crucial skills and insights for effective democratic participation.
