Center of Excellence in Tunneling and Underground Construction

The Center of Excellence in Tunneling and Underground Construction (CoETUC) at MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU), Pune, is India’s first dedicated facility focused on advancing education, research, and training in tunnelling and underground infrastructure. Inaugurated by Hon. Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, the centre has been established as a national hub to address the growing demand for skilled professionals and advanced technologies in underground construction.

CoETUC bridges the gap between academia, industry, and government by providing a platform for applied research, hands-on training, and technology development. The center houses state-of- the-art facilities, including a Drilling and Blasting Laboratory developed in collaboration with Sandvik, and a Tunnel Monitoring Laboratory established with Tata Projects Ltd. These facilities are equipped with advanced simulators, instrumentation systems, and real-time monitoring tools, enabling practical learning and research.

CoETUC supports the pioneering M.Tech. in Tunnel Engineering programme at MIT-WPU, which has received endorsement from the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), placing it among a select few globally recognized programs. The center also conducts specialized training programs for organizations such as the Border Roads Organisation and National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, enhancing national capacity in tunnelling.

With strong industry collaborations and a focus on emerging technologies such as AI, digital twins, and smart monitoring, CoETUC plays a vital role in addressing challenges associated with complex geological conditions, particularly in the Himalayan region. It contributes to safer, more efficient, and sustainable tunnelling practices.
