Veteran Actor & Psychiatrist

Dr. Mohan Agashe is one of India's most distinguished figures at the intersection of medicine and the performing arts. A psychiatrist of national standing and a versatile actor of extraordinary range, he has spent over five decades enriching both the mental healthcare landscape and Indian cinema and theatre. His life exemplifies how intellectual rigour and artistic sensibility can coexist and reinforce each other at the highest level.

Dr. Agashe completed his MBBS and MD in Psychiatry from B.J. Medical College, Pune. He served as Professor of Psychiatry at B.J. Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, Pune (1981–1991), and was instrumental in establishing the Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health (MIMH) in Pune in 1991, a state-level institution focused on training, research, and rehabilitation. He served as its founding Director before going on to become Director General of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune (1997–2002). In 1998, his work led to the formulation of a new mental health policy by the Government of Maharashtra, and he was subsequently appointed Mental Health Advisor to the State Government.

On stage and screen, Dr. Agashe's career is equally extraordinary. He made his Marathi film debut with Samna (1975) and gained national recognition through iconic performances in films such as Sadgati (1981, directed by Satyajit Ray), Gandhi (1982), Aakrosh (1980), Rang De Basanti (2006), Ab Tak Chhappan, and Astu: So Be It (2015). He co-founded the Theatre Academy in Pune in 1980 with Jabbar Patel and Satish Alekar, and is celebrated for his landmark portrayal of Nana Phadnavis in Vijay Tendulkar's Ghashiram Kotwal, a production that was showcased at international festivals. His dual career has earned him the Padma Shri (1990), the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1996), and Germany's prestigious Goethe Medal (2004).
