Dr. Ashok Gadgil is a globally recognised environmental engineer and innovator, currently serving as the Andrew & Virginia Rudd Family Foundation Chair Professor of Safe Water & Sanitation, at the University of California, Berkeley.

His work spans a remarkable range of innovations aimed at improving the lives of people in developing countries, particularly through sustainable energy and water technologies.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Gadgil has made profound contributions to the fields of energy efficiency, safe drinking water, and environmental science. He is widely acclaimed for developing energy-efficient stoves for Darfur refugees, UV Waterworks—a technology that provides safe drinking water to millions—and pioneering work in arsenic removal from groundwater in Bangladesh.

In addition to his groundbreaking research, Dr. Gadgil has held key roles as a mentor and educator, guiding the next generation of engineers and scientists. His work has been recognised with numerous awards, including the Heinz Award in the Environment and the Lemelson-MIT Award for Global Innovation.

Dr. Gadgil holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley.
