School of Polymer Engineering
The School of Polymer Engineering is located in the E-wing of the MIT, Kothrud campus. All the classrooms are well lit and airy, providing a conducive ambience for teaching and learning. The classrooms are equipped with modern teaching aids like LCD projectors, over-head projectors etc. The School is well equipped with nine laboratories representing all the sectors in Polymer Engineering. The MIT-Compuplast Computer laboratory is equipped with the most advanced Polymer Processing simulation software: Virtual Extrusion Laboratory (VEL), T-SIM, B-SIM and Moldex 3D along with CATIA 3D modelling software and AutoCAD. The Departmental Library has more than 2000 books with 60 percent of the books in circulation at any given time.
The Department library has books prescribed as per the syllabus along with reference books catering to the need of students as well as faculty. It also houses a collection of Final Year project reports for more than ten years for research purposes.
APPLIED CHEMISTRY LABORATORIES
Synthesis and analysis form the backbone of Polymer Chemistry. The Applied Chemistry laboratories facilitate the synthesis of simple compounds along with their qualitative and quantitative analysis. Equipment available includes B.O.D. Incubator, C.O.D. digester, D.O. Meter, Ultra sonicator, Colorimeter, Conductometer and PH meter.
POLYMER SYNTHESIS LABORATORY
Polymer Synthesis Laboratory facilitates the synthesis of various polymers by different polymerization techniques on a laboratory scale. The laboratory is extensively utilized for the project work of the final year and Post graduate Polymer Engineering students.
Equipment available: The laboratory has various equipment like the polymerization reactor assemblies, water bath, oil bath, electronic weighing balance, ovens, vacuum pump, double distillation column, microwave oven and magnetic stirrers.
POLYMER PROCESSING OPERATIONS
Polymer Processing Operations Laboratory is equipped with equipment dealing with the major processing techniques in the industry. This laboratory is extensively used for final year undergraduate and postgraduate projects along with industrial consultancy work.
Equipment: The equipment available include injection moulding machines, blown film extrusion plant, compression moulding machine, thermoforming machine, blow moulding machine, roto moulding, high frequency welding machine, pad printing. It is equipped with drilling, milling and lathe facilities.ling, milling and lathe facilities.
POLYMER RHEOLOGY AND COMPOUNDING LABORATORY
The laboratory caters to premixing, blending and melt compounding of polymers and additives along with determining basic melt rheological properties of polymers.
Equipment available: Batch and Continuous compounding equipment such as Two Roll Mill, Sigma Mixer, High speed mixer, Single Screw extruder, Brabender Plasticorder, MFI Tester, Instron Capillary Rheometer and Rheovis 2100 Capillary Rheometer.
POLYMER IDENTIFICATION AND COMPOSITES LABORATORY
The polymer identification and composites laboratory caters to identification of different polymers and preparation of polymer composites.
Equipment available: Laboratory includes Melting Point Apparatus, Spray Gun and other basic equipment for preparation of fibre-reinforced laminates.
POLYMER TESTING AND CHARACTERIZATION LABORATORY
This laboratory deals with testing of mechanical, thermal and other characteristics of polymers. It is extensively used for industrial testing and consultancy and final year undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
Equipment available: The laboratory is equipped with testing equipment including Tensile testing machine, Izod and Charpy impact testing machine, Falling dart impact testing for films, Coeffiecnt of Friction determination for films and a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer.
COMPUTER AND SIMULATION LABORATORY
The laboratory has more than 30 personal computers with all the basic word processing and spread sheet facilities along with printing and scanning facility along with access to the internet.
MIT-COMPUPLAST POLYMER PROCESSING SIMULATION LABORATORY
The Compuplast polymer processing simulation lab helps to design, simulate and optimize various polymer-processing operations. Virtual extrusion Laboratory is simulation software meant for design of extrusion screws and dies. T-SIM and B-SIM are software packages used for simulating the thermoforming and blow moulding process. Both predict the final wall thickness distribution based on the specified processing parameters. VEL TM, T-SIM, B-SIM software licenses are donated by Compuplast, Canada. Moldex3D is the world leading CAE software for the plastics injection moulding industry. It helps to optimize product design and manufacturability, shorten time-to-market, and maximize product return on investment.
There are 25 PC’s equipped with i5 and i7 core. Following is the list of software facility in the laboratory.
