School of Physics


Physics, which is sometimes called as Natural Philosophy, is a science of matter, energy and their interaction as experienced in our universe. This ‘definition’ hardly represents what physics exactly means and allows physics to overlap on almost every branch of science and technology. The disciplines like chemical physics, biophysics, mathematical physics, geophysics, astrophysics, medical physics, polymer physics, petrophysics and engineering physics clearly indicate the all-inclusive nature of physics. One remarkable difference between physics and other disciplines is that while other sciences try to explain a phenomenon using the principles peculiar to their own field, physics tries to explain the same phenomenon using the generalized and minimum set of (or possibly using single) principles.

Throughout its course of development, physics has evolved through the interlocking of theory, experiment, and technology. Though many branches like thermodynamics, electronics, fluid mechanics, material science, electromagnetic engineering have branched off from physics during the course of its evolution, physics still continues with its original aim of understanding nature and natural phenomena. For a technocrat or an engineer, physics is just like a ‘window’ through which he can observe nature in a scientific manner.

At present, the School of Physics runs a course named Physics, in F. Y. B. Tech. This course has a lab component where students perform seven experiments in addition to a few demonstrations in each trimester and submit the term work. The performance is evaluated on the basis of well-defined parameters including viva. The Physics labs A206 and B107 admeasure 134 m 2 and 67 m 2 respectively. Both the labs are well equipped with all the required equipment (including experimental and demonstration setups and a few research facilities).

The School also has a departmental library which has all the required references. The school has well-qualified faculty with excellent teaching records. Physics is taught with an emphasis on practical applications. The School envisages expanding with a threefold objective. One is to offer Physics courses (regular and/or electives) required in various branches of engineering and technology. Second is to start short duration certificate courses and the third is to launch a B. Tech. (Engineering Physics) program.
The school also proposes to start a research program related to emerging branches of Physics, particularly nanoscience and nanotechnology
