The ‘National Students Parliament’ held between 23rd to 25th February 2019 at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, was first of its kind youth parliament organised by ‘Kerala Legislative Assembly (KLA)’. The conclave has been jointly organised by KLA in association with Department of Parliamentary Affairs-Govt. of Kerala, MIT-World Peace University –Pune and UNICEF

The ‘National Students Parliament’ was a part of the six series conclaves under ‘Festival on Democracy’ marking the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Kerala Legislature.

The Hon’ble Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly Shri. P. Shreeramkrishnan had participated as a key dignitary at the preceding ‘Bhartiya Chhatra Sansad’ i.e. Indian Students Parliament which was Founded by Shri Rahul V. Karad –Vice President- MAEER’s MIT, Pune in 2011. Shri. P. Shreeramakrishnan along with Shri. Rahul V. Karad felt the need to host such a ‘Students Parliament’ at State Level supported by State Governments across India to sensitise the Youth on Democratic Values and encourage them to participate actively in Public and Political life of the Nation.

The three days ‘National Students Parliament’ conclave held a series of Session Discussions where eminent Leaders and subject experts shared insightful facts supported by case examples such as- Shri. Pinayari Vijayan-Chief Minister Kerala; Shri. P. Shreeramakrishnan-Speaker, Kerala Legislative Assembly; Shri. Rahul V. Karad- Executive President, MIT-World Peace University; Shri. Kanhaiya Kumar, Social Activist; Shri.Jignesh Mevani- M.L.A, Gujarat Legislative Assembly; Shri. Shashi Tharoor- MP (Thiruvananthapuram); Shri. V. Sasi, Deputy Speaker, Secretary, Kerala Legislative Assembly; Dr. T. M. Thomas Isaac, Minister for Finance, Shri. Ramesh Chennithala, Leader of Opposition; Shri Prakash Karat- General Secretary of the CPI; Swami Agnivesh-Former Minister, Haryana; Dr. Andrew Turner -Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor, Coventry University, UK; Dr. Achuthsankar S. Nair (HOD, Computational Biology and Bio-Informatics, University of Kerala); Dr. Sajji Gopinath-CEO, Kerala Startup Mission; Shri. K. Jayakumar- Chief Secretary (Retd.), Government of Kerala; Shri. Job Zacharia (Chief, UNICEF office for Tamil Nadu & Kerala); Shri. K. SABARINATHAN, MLA; Shri. Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary CPI (M), Smt. Kavitha Kalvakuntle, MP and Shri. P. Biju- Vice Chairman of Kerala Youth Welfare Board among others.

Each session had 4 Student Speakers from various states of India, who voiced their opinion on ‘Subjects of National Concern’. At the end of each days sessions, there was a special youth connect program titled ‘Rings of Fire’ that facilitated open air and informal discussions moderated by University Representative professors. There were diverse cultural dance and music programs in the evenings which were thoroughly enjoyed by participating students and helped all students to gel well with each other. The encouraging response from this ‘National Students Parliament’ has prompted the Govt. of Kerala to continue this mission of ‘Inspiring Youth and Strengthening Democracy’ in coming years.

About Festival on Democracy (National Students Parliament)

Festival on Democracy’ was conceived marking the occasion of Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Kerala Legislative Assembly. The Festival on Democracy includes a series of national level conclaves aimed at fostering, inculcating, sensitizing, reiterating and strengthening the values and ethos of democracy, as envisaged in the Constitution of India. Each of these conclaves are being held at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala with a view to closely involve diverse sections of the society in this effort.

The National Students’ Parliament, Kerala – 2019 was a three day mega conclave and part of the six series conclaves under the ‘Festival on Democracy’ witnessing the participation of about 2000 students from various Universities across India, aimed to inculcate in youth a love for democratic values and the democratic way of life, and to instil a craving for democracy as a system, thought and vision. The Sessions were centred on the theme power and possibilities of democracy and politics’ wherein topic covered all aspects of democracy, politics and the Constitution of India with emphasis on world peace and sustainable development.

The Kerala Legislative Assembly, popularly known as Niyamasabha, is the law making body of Kerala, one of the 29 states in India.  The Assembly has 140 elected representatives and one nominated member from the Anglo Indian community.  The current Legislative Assembly is the fourteenth since the formation of Kerala.  The Hon’ble Speaker of the Assembly is Shri P. Sreeramakrishnan and the Hon’ble deputy Speaker is Shri. V. Sasi.  The Leader of the Assembly is the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan from CPI(M) and the Hon’ble Leader of the Opposition is Shri. Ramesh Chennithala from the INC.
