M.Sc. Physics (Photonics) is a unique program launched by the School of Physics from 2020-21. This program gives the students a deep insight in Physics as much as other M.Sc. Physics programs do. However in addition, in this program, after learning core physics in 1st year, students will learn Photonics as a specialization to the fullest depth in 2nd year. Thus the structure of this program gives an opportunity to the students to have an equally poised career in Physics and/or Photonics. The structure of this program has been designed by reputed Physics faculty who is quite aware of the importance of such a blended program. Needless to say that manpower skilled in Photonics with a strong base of core Physics will have careers with flying colors in this area, may it be research and academics or an Industry.

What is Photonics?

Photonics is basically Photon based Electronics. It is a prudent combination of Optics, Optical Engineering, Optoelectronics and Electronics. Photonics deals with generation, detection and manipulation of Photons through Emission, Transmission, Modulation, Signal Processing, Switching, Amplification and Sensing. Presently Photonics covers UV, Visible and IR range of electromagnetic spectrum. Photonics basically incorporates Lasers, Fiber Optics, Optical Sensors, Photonic Materials, Optical Computing, Lighting, Displays and Li Fi. A high profile and extensive research this field ranging from Photonic materials to Photonic devices and circuits and lasers to optical computing profoundly indicates that Photonics is going to be a key technology in the near future. Several photonics industries have been launched and are working well. Several academic and research institutions have taken up Photonics research to a top priority. Indeed, looking at the key role of light in the present and future technologies UNESCO celebrated year 2015 as an “International Year of Light”

Why M.Sc. Physics (Photonics)?

Photonics has sharply aroused up after the invention of laser (1960) and Fiber Optics (1970). More than 50% Photonics has been industrialized. Applications of light are increasing steadily in technological sector. Several industries based on lasers, fiber optics, lighting, display technologies, photonic devices, photonic sensors, and optical engineering are rapidly coming up in India and abroad as well. These industries require manpower scientifically, technically and professionally skilled in Photonics. M.Sc. Physics (Photonics) program will cater to these needs. Further, several sub-disciplines of Photonics such as optical computing, nano-photonics, bio-photonics, silicon photonics are on the forefront of the research in Photonics. The progress of this research requires trained manpower with research aptitude and research skills in Photonics. M.Sc. Physics (Photonics) will also cater to these needs
