Kale is presently serving as an Emeritus Professor and Director, Center of Excellence (Materials Science), Department of Research and Development, Dr. Vishwanath Karad MIT World Peace University, Pune. Also, he is an Emeritus Scientist in C-MET (Center for Materials for Electronics Technology), an autonomous scientific society under Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. Before starting his emeritus positions, he served C-MET as a scientist in different categories for more than three decades where he retired as the Director General.

His area of scientific research includes advanced functional materials, nanomaterials, nano-composites (glass and polymer), organic semiconductors, glass ceramics for the advanced applications for photonic devices, electronics, optical sensors, lithium/sodium ion battery as well air batteries, supercapacitors, thermoelectric materials, solar cells, photocatalyst for solar hydrogen production/storage, radiation-based devices, and quantum dots.

To his credit, he has published more than 350 scientific research articles in peer-reviewed journals, most of his publications were under the journals promoted by Royal Society of Chemistry, American Chemical Society, American Ceramic Society, Wiley, Elsevier, Springer, etc. Some of his works were appreciated and published in high impact journals, like: Advanced Functional Materials, Small, Nanoscale, Journal of Materials Chemistry, Chemical Communications, Green Chemistry, etc.

His standard scholarly metrics shows that his articles were cited more than 12200 with h-index of 59 and i10 index of 217. He also has 30 patents to his credit where 4 patents are from US and 2 patents are from PCT. Till date, 23 students worked under his research guidance to receive their doctoral degrees, 8 students are currently working under him for their PhDs, and more than 15 students were co-supervised by him for their doctoral degrees. He delivered lectures in more than 250 invited / plenary talks.

So far Dr. Kale successfully completed 44 funded projects (incl. 4 projects supported by international agencies) worth more than 115 crore INR majorly supported by MeitY, DST, MNRE, BRNS, ISRO, Graphite India Ltd., DRDO, etc. In this journey, he also developed more than 40 products (lead-free apron, glass catalysts for hydrogen production, lithium-ion two-wheeler battery, etc.), transferred 3 technologies to industries, and developed materials for satellite and space vehicles.

He was a recipient of Boyscast Fellowship (under DST, GoI, 1996), Brain Pool Fellowship (2004), MRSI Gold Medal Award (2010), Photocatalysis Award from KRICT, Daejon South Korea (2013), Senior Brain Pool Fellowship (2014), VASVIK Industrial Research Award (2019), APAM International Award (2019), AICTE-INAE Distinguished Visiting Professorship (2020), Prof. B.P. Verma Memorial Award for Excellence in Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology from Indian Chemical Society (2025), Prof. S. K. Bhattacharya Award in Catalysis from Catalysis Society of India (2025). Exclusively, he has been listed among the World's Top 2% Scientists for the years 2023 and 2024 by Stanford University.

He is an Elected Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC, UK), Maharashtra Academy of Sciences, Indian Chemical Society, and Materials Research Society of India.

He did his under-graduation (1984) and post-graduation (1986) in Chemistry under University of Pune, and later he did his doctoral research under National Chemical Laboratory and submitted his thesis for the PhD degree from Shivaji University (1992), Kolhapur.
