Higher Education for Sustainable Development

Sustainable development is defined as “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Creating higher education opportunities related to sustainable development is an essential aspect of Universities response to sustainable development goals.

The Universities primary role as knowledge producer and custodian of ideas, higher education can serve as a powerful means to help create a more sustainable future. In this context, ‘educating sustainable development’ has become, a critical initiative of the Universities to help address many of the problems associated with the development of society and human beings.

The Pune based Maharashtra Institute of Technology- World Peace University (MIT-WPU) has established a new Faculty “Social Innovations, Partnership and Co-Creation” (SIPC) as an interdisciplinary- higher education response to the Global Commitment to Sustainable Development and envisages to promote “a world of universal respect for human rights and human dignity, the rule of law, justice, equality and non-discrimination”.

The Faculty (SIPC) has created an undergraduate program, BA Social Sciences, Five master’s degree programs, and a Ph.D. Program. The faculty is building partnerships with government, civil society and voluntary agencies to offer this program. The faculty’s teaching, training, and social engagement will be focusing on social innovation and creating values to promote sustainable and inclusive development.

“Social innovation is the process of developing and deploying effective solutions to challenging and often systemic social and environmental issues in support of social progress” The new faculty will be promoting Social innovations as new social praxis to meet sustainable development needs in a better way. The students are encouraged to take up leadership in social entrepreneurship in providing services to address social and environmental requirements.

The faculty is particularly committed to the co-creation of value addition through research and engagement with the Government, Civil society, Business sector, and Student community. The teaching, learning and research emphasis of SIPC are; Poverty, Hunger, Health, Education, Climate Change, Gender Equity, Social Justice and Peace.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Role of Compassion and Peace in Humanitarian Action, Engaging Rural Societies, Promoting Innovations and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development, Sustainable Ecology are the key focus area of the newly established faculty.

This multidisciplinary program is offered in partnership with the University’s School of Government’s ongoing program on Master’s in “Political Leadership & Government” (MPG)

These courses are developed by some of the leading experts in their field. The emphasis on fieldwork and a policy-oriented research project enable the students to develop their career in Development sector or to become organic intellectuals in the society. After pursuing their Master degree, they may join in various fields with the NGOs, civil society, government, and international agencies. The career opportunities are always high in the development sector, both as policy and program specialists. The faculty will work closely with the placement team to assist the students to build their career.

MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) has been established as a State Private University through legislation from the Government of Maharashtra. MIT-WPU became operational from June 2017, initially by the gradual transformation of AICTE approved institutions of which most of the courses were accredited.

Admission Process:

Eligibility : Any graduate from a recognized university may apply for the program and English proficiency test certificate (Non-native speaker: TOEFL 92 or IELTS 7.0)

Selection Criteria : Two recommendation letters from scholars who have the title of associate professor or above or are senior professionals in the related field; Transcript of academic record, research and awards and working experience in development fields preferable but not mandatory.

Course Fee :Program fee Rs. 3/- lac per student to be paid in two instalments. 1st instalment of Rs.1,50,000/- at the time of admissions. 2nd Instalment of Rs.1,50,000/- before the beginning of fourth trimester.
