To establish new technology in recycled concrete waste , entrepreneurship ,and to create research ambience for masters and doctoral students of civil engineering for projects based on `Characterization of concrete demolition waste ,its recycling for low cost construction products.` The department also has published works in the field of `Precast concrete technology and product development’. One of the recent challenges faced by construction industry is `concrete debries300-500 kg/sq. meter& construction waste 40-50 kg/sq. meter is created. It is an important constituent which consumes huge amount of aggregates made of natural stone and sand utilizing huge natural resource. Due to continuous and fast development in infrastructure, this demand of concrete is increasing day by day which results in increased consumption of quarried stone as an aggregate. Projections for building material requirement by the housing sector indicate a shortage of aggregates. There is a significant gap in demand and supply. On other side daily generation of Construction and Demolition Waste (C&DW), is increasing day by day. Hence recycling of these waste and reuse as construction material can reduce the depletion of natural resource, Constituting major benefit towards the environment protection. This research proposal intends to create research environment and come up with innovative design solution for use of recycled concrete as construction material. Also proposal; aims at generating knowledge, testing and consultancy opportunity, entrepreneurship opportunity for young engineers, contribute in `Sustainable material technology for low cost housing projects`.

Title: Research Faculty and Student Exchange programme
Date of Commencement and Period of funding:  July 2017 for two years
Amount  : 56,000 Euros
Funding Agency :   Erasmus Plus , MIT-POLIMI (Travel and stay for six months for 8 students, 2 faculty members of MIT)

The partner  institutions MIT –Pune and Politechnico De Milano agree to cooperate for the exchange of students and/or staff in the context of the Erasmus+ programme. They commit to respect the quality requirements of the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education in all aspects of the organisation and management of the mobility, in particular the recognition of the credits (or equivalent) awarded to students by the partner institution. The institutions also commit to sound and transparent management of funds allocated to them through Erasmus+.

Title: Design and development of indeginious hip and knee joint

Development of indigenous Hip joint prosthesis. A technology transfer project. Design, analysis, of Total Hip joint prosthesis to make it affordable to user in India. Developing the technology to manufacture and transfer it to manufacturer for initiating production. Thus bringing down the cost of implant, improving rate of surgeries and thus quality of life of patient.

Title: DFEM analysis of Knee joint Prosthesis

INDUS is Sancheti modular Prosthesis for total knee replacement surgery. It has been developed at SIOR a indigenized knee by the chief surgeon of SIOR Honorable ,Padmabhushan ,Dr.K.H.Sancheti. This product is developed in view of reducing TKR surgery cost by developing ,manufacturing and production of  knee joint  at SIOR.Thereby it is expected to facilitate more number of knee replacement surgeries and give better quality life for more number of patients. Thus it is targeted to cater for increasing need of TKR surgeries in India every year.

This work intends to give research backup for development of INDUS and provide it with design and quality checks as per standards prescribed by ASTM and ISO. Overall to develop a cost effective well engineered knee joint and make it viable as against imported prosthesis of higher cost.

In pursuant to the Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the Italian Republic and the Republic of India, signed in New Delhi, on 28th November 2003 and entered into force on 3rd November 2009, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Directorate General for the Country Promotion (Economy, Culture and Science) of the Republic of Italy and the Ministry of Science & Technology, Department of Science and Technology, of the Republic of India, hereinafter referred to as the “Parties”, have agreed on the following Executive Programme for Scientific & Technological Cooperation for the duration of 2012-2014.

    • This letter of agreement sets out the terms and conditions on which the British Council, a Charity registered in England and Wales under number 290131 acting through its local office in India is at 17, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi – 110001 (‘the Council’) proposes to provide travel grant funding to (Please fill the Name of the institute and complete postal address).
        • This Agreement and its Annexes are to be read as one document and together constitute the Indian Institution/organisation Agreement with the Council.
        • A travel grant award of £1,500 will be awarded to the Partnership in order to facilitate partnerships between the UK and Indian institutions.
        • The visit should provide the opportunity for the Indian Institution/ organization to network, develop plans, clarify objectives, activities and outcomes with the UK Institution in preparation for submitting a UKIERI proposal under the skills strand.
    • With the collaboration of BSDC & MIT the project would be Building Services Development inclusive of Air-conditioning, Refrigeration and Renewable Technologies. Time will be spent in the classroom and workshop with industrial site visits to underpin the knowledge and skills to enable the expansion and strengthening of training activities in Construction sector with the strong base of skill, knowledge and resources BSDC offer would ensure high competency for students and Staff with the experience of the project this will professionally develop all involved.

Construction and Sustainability – BSDC can offer training in all specialist areas of Construction and Building Services from Level 1 to Level 6. We are focusing on Renewable construction technologies air conditioning and Refrigeration an area that will support both the UK and Indian Construction development and infrastructure. All courses are accredited and delivered in the UK by Cskills Awards – CITB Construction Skills Awarding Organisation.
