I welcome and congratulate you for the first step in the wonderful and fascinating world of polymers. This world comprises of a wide spectrum of our day-to-day life commodity products and highly specialized products.
The significant contribution of polymers in many path breaking technological developments happening on various fronts is now an accepted fact world over.
This 4-years degree course has legacy of more than 3 decades. It came into the existence in the year 1983. Some of the stalwarts such as Prof. M.V. Joshi, Dr. Raghungath Mashelkar, Dr. Vikas Nadkarni, Dr. S.C. Potnis contributed in designing the curriculum of this course. This legacy was further continued with well-qualified and dedicated teachers.
Thus, the curriculum has become a confluence of core polymer engineering subjects along with necessary subjects from material science and engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and basic sciences.
Our primary objective is to provide a well-rounded engineering education that prepares our students to be readily employable professionals. The curriculum provides a sound foundation in basic sciences, engineering disciplines and communication skills. Long term and continuous interaction with industries like DSM Engineering Plastics, Reliance Industries Ltd., Tata Auto Components, Tata Motors, Polyone, Supreme Petrochemicals Ltd., Electronica Machine Tools, Varroc Ltd. and research and academic organizations like National Chemical Laboratories (NCL), Pune, DIAT Pune, DRDO, Institute Of Chemical Technology, Mumbai and IIT, Bombay has resulted in immense opportunities for internships and career.
This confluence of various streams and exposure to real life problems through compulsory in-plant training (internships) modules, workshops, in-house projects, projects in collaboration with research organizations and/or industries has provided wider spectrum of employability sectors, and, thereby, achieving key positions in industries at national and international frontiers.
Some of the Alumni of this Department, being current faculty members, are well-versed with aspirations and needs of the students which results in developing good interaction and relations with the students, thereby, causing a strong Alumni network.

B.Tech (Polymer Engineering)

The Department of Polymer Engineering offers an undergraduate B.Tech program delivered by its highly qualified faculty members and state-of-the-art facilities. The course is designed to provide fundamental understanding of Polymer Science and Engineering (PSE) and exposure to the latest advances and technologies in polymer industry. Polymer engineers work in the realm of developing or testing plastics/rubbers or related equipment and processes. Polymer engineers may work in areas that include-polymer manufacturing industries as production engineers or technologists, quality control inspectors, product design and analysis, equipment design for polymer processing and process management.
Polymer Engineers/ Technologists have high potential job opportunities in both Public Sector and Private Sector enterprises apart from Academic and Research Fields.

Programme Highlights

The School of Polymer Engineering at MIT-WPU encourages students to organize and participate in various extra and co-curricular events to ensure their all round development.

    • Polymer Students’ Association, a student body which has been in existence since last three decades, has been organizing national level paper presentation competition “Affinity” and Industry-Institute meet “Confluence” for more than a decade.

    • Student Events- Polymer Engineering Students participate in technical events such as Techfest, Rangostav, Supra, Baha, etc. and sports events such as Zest, Melange, Summit, etc. organized by other institutes at MIT-WPU.

    • Study tours are organized by the School. They are encouraged to visit national level exhibitions such as Plasti-Vision and Plast-India.

    • Internships-The School of Polymer Engineering provides opportunities for internships and placements in industry and research organizations.

    • Alumni Network- The School has a strong alumni spread across sectors in Polymer Engineering in India and all across the globe contributing to the field. The alumni are a great asset in terms of their contribution to the School for internship, mentoring of the current students, placement and support to projects.

Programme Structure

    • First year provides foundation course related to Science and Engineering. Design is a creative activity central to the engineering profession; students in very first year are exposed to design thinking. Social internship in first year is credit based and exposes the students to the problems faced by community. This is expected to sow the seeds of socially oriented innovation in the student’s mind.

    • Second year courses are designed to provide grounding in basic engineering sciences from the chosen disciplines. Summer internship at the end of second year involves guided study tour. The tour will expose the student to our diverse culture, technology achievements and challenges.

    • Third and fourth years include subjects belonging to the chosen track in his/her own branch. International study tour of four weeks duration will offer global exposure whereas semester long industry internship in the final year will offer real life industry experience. Capstone project in the eighth semester and inter-disciplinary project in the seventh semester will inculcate problem solving skills, team spirit, professional ethics and habit of self-learning.

M.Tech (Polymer Engineering)

The Post Graduate programme in Polymer Engineering commenced in the year 2003 with the intake capacity of 10 students. Till academic year 2016-2017, the program has been delivered as per the semester pattern. Under MIT-World Peace University, since academic year 2017-2018, the School of Polymer Engineering offers the 2-years full-time M.Tech programme as per the Trimester Pattern with an intake of 18 students. The curriculum offers an optimum blend of core courses and domain specific electives, laboratory courses, mini projects, seminars and industrial projects. The School believes in strong academic foundation along with experiential learning through extra and co-curricular activities.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria

B.Tech (Polymer Engineering)

MIT-WPU follows UGC specified eligibility norms while accepting applications for admissions from students. To be eligible you need to meet the below mentioned criteria-

      • Candidate should have passed 10 + 2 in Science from any statutory board with a minimum of 50% marks in total as well as in PCM.

      • Passed Diploma in Engineering and Technology and obtained at least 50 % marks.

      • Valid Score in Entrance Examinations conducted by competent authorities.

      • Student can appear for entrance examination conducted by MIT-WPU.

      • As per Reservation Policy norms of Government.

AND

Obtained score in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by Indian Institute of Technology.

iii) For sponsored candidate, minimum two years of full time work experience in a registered firm / company/ industry/ educational and/or research institute / any Government Department or Government Autonomous Organization in the relevant field in which admission is sought.
